	      Capital City Conference on

 COMBINATORICS and THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE

		  MAY 22-26, 1989

The George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

sponsored by the National Science Foundation
	and The George Washington University

The aim of the conference is to offer a setting for relaxed and
productive professional interaction between combinatorists and
theoretical computer scientists. We will aim for substantive rather
than numerous talks, in an effort to maximize information content and
depth, and to allow time for discussions among the participants. We
hope that the conference activities will expand the participants'
research interests across the boundaries of the two disciplines, and
lead to increased collaboration between members of the two
communities.

	     TOPICS AND PRINCIPAL SPEAKERS

graph theory

Laszlo Lovasz, Princeton University and Eotvos Lorand University
    "Communication Complexity of Graph Problems"
     May 22, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and May 23, 11 a.m.

algebraic combinatorics

Richard Stanley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
    "Applications of Algebra to Combinatorics"
     May 24, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and May 25, 11:00 a.m.

algorithms and complexity

Richard Karp, University of California, Berkeley
    "Randomized Algorithms"
     May 25, 2:00 p.m. and May 26, 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Each principal speaker will give three lectures which will overview
the topic and will highlight major results, techniques, and open
problems. The principal speakers will be asked to provide a list of
suggested reading which will be made available to the interested
preregistrants before the time of the conference.

CALL FOR PAPERS
We will schedule 25-minute contributed talks on subjects directly
related to the conference topics and consistent with the theme of the
conference. We will do our best to accommodate contributed talks to
the extent permitted by the intent to give sufficient time to each
talk, and to have time for informal discussions among the
participants. If you are interested in giving a contributed talk,
please submit before March 1, 1989 a two-page abstract describing the
subject, background, and main results of your paper . In the case of
joint work, please indicate which of the authors will give the talk.
A special issue of Discrete Applied Mathematics and/or Annals of
Discrete Mathematics will be devoted to the refereed proceedings of
this conference. Complete texts of submissions must reach Rodica
Simion by June 15, 1989.

PROBLEM SESSION, Thursday, May 25, 7:30 p.m.
We invite contributions of open problems which will generate
discussions and collaborations. Please send problems, including
references, by March 1, 1989. Preregistered participants will receive
the list of problems before the beginning of the conference.

SPECIAL SESSION, Wednesday, May 24, 7:30 p.m.
Interested participants are invited to an evening discussion on topics
including funding sources for research in combinatorics and
theoretical computer science, and educational issues in combinatorics
and computer science. If you wish to suggest other discussion topics,
please do so by March 1, 1989.

PARTICIPANTS SUPPORT
Limited funds are available for partial support of participants, in
particular for graduate students. Selection for the graduate student
awards will be made based on a description of the student's research
interests and work, and two letters of recommendation.	For full
consideration, applications should be received by March 7, 1989.

LOCAL INFORMATION
The conference talks will begin on May 22, at 9:00 a.m., in Marvin
Center, room 402. The registration desk will open at 8:30 a.m., in
room 410. Marvin Center is located on the GWU campus at 800 21st
Street, N.W. We have reserved blocks of rooms at reduced rates, under
"GWU Math Dept Conference", at several hotels which are within 10-15
min.\ walking distance of the metro station and campus. River Inn,
924 25th Street, N.W., (202) 337-7600;$95 single/double. Georgetown
Marbury Hotel, 3000 M Street, N.W.,(202) 726-5000; $80 single/double.
State Plaza Hotel, 2117 E Street, N.W., (202) 861-8200 or
1-800-424-2859; mention "group number 2815"; $85 single, $95 double.
Lombardy Hotel, 2019 I Street, N.W., (202) 828-2600; $80 single, $90
double. Please call the hotel directly and guarantee your
reservations by April 21, 1989.	After this date, the rooms will be
released, and the regular rates will apply to available rooms.	On a
first come first served basis, until April 15, 1989, rooms can be
reserved in Thurston Hall, 1900 F Street, N.W. This is a GWU
dormitory with air-conditioned rooms, private bath, and
sheets/towels/etc. provided. The information on the registration form
is particularly important in signing up for dormitory space. The
rates are \$30 for single, \$20 for double occupancy. >From National
Airport, take the metro Blue Line to the GWU/Foggy Bottom stop, which
is at 23rd St. and I St., N.W.	Cab rides from National and Dulles
Airports are approx. $10 and $30, resp. From Union Station, take the
metro Red Line to Metro Center, change to the Blue Line, and get off
at GWU/Foggy Bottom. Cab rides from Union Station are approx. $5.
May weather in Washington is pleasant, with average highs of 68F and
lows of 58F. May is also a popular camping time. Attractive camping
facilities exist at Greenbelt Park (National Park Service),
