[news.announce.conferences] Intelligent CAD Workshop

farhad@lyra.usc.edu (Farhad Arbab) (03/05/89)

			CALL FOR PAPERS

The Third IFIP W.G. 5.2 Workshop on Intelligent CAD

Organized by the IFIP Working Group 5.2

	      26-29 September 1989, Osaka, Japan

AIM

This workshop is the last in the series of three IFIP Working group
5.2 workshops on Intelligent CAD. In October 1987, the first workshop
was successfully held at MIT, USA, and the second at the University of
Cambridge, UK, in which various concepts and problems about
Intelligent CAD (ICAD) were outlined.

The concept of ICAD is now developed and it is not too early to say
that ICAD is an environment or a set of tools to support designer's
intellectual activities with built-in design knowledge.

In the first workshop we have found out that understanding the nature
of design processes and representation of design objects in an
evolutionary design process are more important. The second workshop
was more concerned about such technical issues as features and
geometric reasonings and system architecture and implementation tools,
besides pursuing further understanding design.	The results of the
first workshops will be soon published from North-Holland. The second
workshop record is also in preparation.

Based on theoretical and technological achievements made in the
previous workshops, this third workshop aims at pin-pointing critical
issued in developing ICAD and identifying future research directions
through stimulating discussions among experts of the field.

SCOPE

- Theoretical issues for developing ICAD

- Implementation tools and techniques for ICAD

- Design research and ICAD

- Design knowledge for ICAD

FORMAT

The number of participants are roughly limited to 50 in order to
stimulate mutual exchange of opinions.	Thus, participation will be
decided based on submitted position papers or extended abstracts.

Potential authors are invited to submit 5 copies of a position paper
(or an extended abstract) of 1000 to 2000 words (reference and figures
do not count) before May 1, 1989. Acceptance will be notified by July
1 and the accepted authors will submit the preprint versions of full
papers by August 15, 1989. The results of the workshop will be
published by North-Holland. The program committee will select papers
for this book from the submitted full papers after the workshop.

A couple of subgroups will be formed during the workshop to discuss
specialized topics. The topics will be suggested at the opening
session based on the reviews of position papers. In addition to this,
there will be distinguished invited speakers.

SCHEDULE

1 May 1989 - Deadline for position papers/extended abstracts

1 July 1989 - Notification of acceptance

15 August 1989 - Deadline for preprint versions

26-29 September 1989 - Workshop
