CALL FOR PARTICIPATION WORKSHOP ON WISDOM-BASED SYSTEMS 22-24 June 1989, Rosario Resort, Orcas Island, Washington Knowledge-based systems are now being applied to a wide spectrum of applications. As new applications in diplomacy, environmental management, jurisprudence, corporate strategy, and others are developed, there is a critical need to understand the limitations and potential of future automated systems. Based on what we have learned from attempts to represent knowledge in computer form, what can we say about the possibility of representing wisdom? Can knowledge-based systems recognize the limits and proper application of their knowledge? Can human values be used to enhance the effectiveness of such systems during judgment and decision making? Will human/computer participatory systems be developed that improve the prospects for wisdom? The workshop will be kept small - about 25 participants. The setting of Rosario Resort on Orcas Island will facilitate informality in individual presentations and promote opportunities for vigorous discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers in computer science, psychology, and philosophy. Papers are invited for consideration in all aspects of wisdom-based systems, including (but not restricted to): - Human value modeling and use - Wisdom development, acquisition, representation - Boundaries of knowledge-based system technology - Modeling of emotions - Applications of wisdom-based systems - Ethical reasoning in computer systems - Recognition of problems that exceed limits of system expertise Five copies of an abstract or a full-length paper (up to 15 pages) should be sent to Jeff Bradshaw before April 15. Acceptance notices will be mailed by April 30. Accepted papers and abstracts will be bound together for distribution at the workshop.
