CALL FOR PARTICIPATION A NEW GENERATION OF INTELLIGENT INTERFACES IJCAI-89 WORKSHOP Tuesday, August 22, 1989 Detroit, Michigan, USA OBJECTIVES Research advances in artificial intelligence and cognitive science are enabling the development of a new generation of intelligent interfaces. These interfaces exploit knowledge about users, tasks, situations, and interface capabilities to help users accomplish complex tasks effectively by interpreting ambiguous inputs correctly in context, phrasing outputs in ways sensitive to users' abilities and situations, and providing advice on efficient ways to accomplish users' goals. Often they are multimodal in that they support more than one medium through which users and computers communicate, providing various combinations of gestures, graphics, menus, natural language, sketching, speech, touch, and video. This workshop will provide a forum for discussion of research topics central to the development of intelligent interfaces. The issues to be addressed include: * Generation and Understanding. What principles underly the creation and understanding of material in each medium? * Selection. How can the system select from among different modalities and styles of presentation to suit the data, task, situation, and user. * Coordination. Material in multiple modalities should be combined in a coherent, integrated interface. How can different modalities be coordinated for output and understood when input? * Modeling. How can knowledge about users, applications, tasks, situations, and interface capabilities be modeled to support the interface? * System and Tool Building. How do the new capabilities influence system development? What sorts of tools can support the construction of cooperative multimodal interfaces? Workshop sessions will consist of panels and discussion sections organized around topics chosen from those listed above. ATTENDANCE To facilitate serious discourse, attendance will be limited to approximately 35. To request to attend the workshop, please submit four (4) copies of each of the following: 1. A paragraph or two outlining the writer's work in the design of intelligent interfaces. 2. A position paper addressing one of the topics listed above. If we can be convinced that we have neglected to mention an important issue, a submission addressing a topic not listed above may be acceptable. The position paper should be no more than four pages long. Invitations to participate in the workshop and panels will be extended on the basis of the submitted information. A copy of the submissions of all participants will be distributed prior to the workshop. REQUIREMENTS The deadline for submitting position papers is May 15, 1989. They should be sent to: IJCAI-89 Interface Workshop c/o Yigal Arens USC/ISI 4676 Admiralty Way Marina del Rey, CA 90292 Invitations to participate will be extended in early June.
