Announcement and Call for Papers for a Two Day Conference on:-

COMPUTER MODELLING IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

To be held on 10-11th April 1990 in the De la Beche Conference Centre at the
Headquarters of the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, near Nottingham
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In all branches of the Environmental Sciences, there is a discernible trend
towards attempting to model natural systems and predict their behaviour, rather
than passive observation. Advancing scientific knowledge of natural processes
has made the design of models feasible, while developments in computer
technology have made their implementation practicable.

The aim of the conference is to bring together workers in the natural
environment sciences (viz. oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, earth and life
sciences) to promote a mutual exchange of ideas on the opportunities and
pitfalls of such modelling, and to achieve cross-fertilisation with those who
provide the enabling technology (ie. computing infrastructure, hardware and
software). It is hoped to attract both those already using modelling
techniques, and those who are considering them for the first time.

The programme will cover a wide range of scientific applications. The scale
will range from models placing heavy demands on the most advanced
supercomputers, to more modest developments on personal computers.
Demonstrations will be invited from suppliers of computer hardware and
software. The proceedings will be published and special emphasis is placed on
the presentation of issues, and the science and technology involved, in a
"common" language suitable for the interdisciplinary audience involved.

It is envisaged that presentations should last about 20 minutes, with some
additional time for discussion. In addition to contributed talks, a number will
be invited and proposals are also welcomed for Poster sessions and
Demonstrations. A Conference Dinner is included in the programme on the evening
of Tuesday 10th April and this will be included in the Conference Fee, together
with a copy of the published Proceedings. Accommodation will not be included
but a list of local hotels etc will be sent to all participants.

Intending authors and other contributors should note the following deadlines:-

Receipt of abstract (up to 2 pages of A4) ........1st September 1989
     Notification of acceptance (following review
      by a multidisciplinary Programme Committee),
and instructions for submission of full papers...1st November 1989
Receipt of full papers ...........................1st February 1990

Proposals for poster sessions and demonstrations should be notified as soon as
possible, and not later than the end of 1989.

Chairman, Organising Committee Chairman, Programme Committee
Mr George Darwall, NERC Dr Peter White,
                                           Deputy Director,
For IMA, Dynamical Research,
  Dr Michael Rycroft Meteorological Office
  Chairman,
  Environmental Mathematics Group

                      ----------------------

notify their name and address, together with telephone (and fax) number.
Official Registration Forms will be sent to them and there will be reduced
rates for early registration (by the end of 1989), as well as for speakers,
members of IMA and NERC, and NERC grant-holders. A Conference Programme will
also be sent out and published nearer the time of the event.
