INTRODUCTION
The International Conference of the Chilean Computer Science
Society is an annual event, held in Santiago de Chile.
Since its beginnings, in 1981, it has become one of the most
important international events of its kind.
The Latin American Conference on Informatics (Panel EXPO-
DATA) is the main activity of CLEI (Latin American Center
for Studies on Informatics). Born in Valpariso, Chile, it
is held each year in a different Latin American country. In
1989, it comes back to Chile, and it is held jointly with
the SCCC Conference.
These events seek to encourage the interchange of knowledge
and experience among academics and professionals working in
Computer Science.
This year, the conference received more than 100 papers,
from 17 countries from North and South America, Europe, Asia
and Oceania. Among them, the program committee selected
those that will be presented in the Technical Presentation
category, and also in that of Short Communications.
Besides refereed papers, the conference includes five
tutorials and four invited talks, delivered by the program
committee members and other invited speakers.
CONFERENCE LOCATION
The conference is held at the Hotel Crowne Plaza, located at
Alameda 136. The registration, the opening ceremony, and
some of the sessions, will be held at the main building of
the Universidad Catolica, located at Alameda 340.
REGISTRATION
The conference registration is $48,000 (Chilean), or US$192.
The members of the Chilean Computer Science Society, the
members of institutions affiliated with CLEI, and the
authors have a 50% discount. In the case of members of the
SCCC, this includes the 1989 annual dues.
Attendees that pay their registrations before June 30 will
have an 8% discount. Copies of the proceedings and badges
can be picked up on Monday, July 10, from 8:30 to 9:30, at
the Universidad Catolica (Alameda 340). Attendees wishing
to register then can do so at that location.
TRANSPORTATION
The conference's official airline, Lan Chile, offers groups
rates to the attendees. Contact the official travel agent
(TURAVION), or the nearest Lan Chile office.
ACCOMMODATION
Blocks of rooms have been reserved at the hotel where the
conference will be held, and also at other nearby hotels.
There are heavily discounted rates for rooms booked before
June 30. Rated include ground transportation from the air-
port to the hotel, and viceversa, breakfasts, a welcome
drink, and taxes. There is a US$7 service charge for the
reservations. Reservations must be made through TURAVION.
WEATHER
Temperatures during the month of July in Santiago range from
0 to 18 degrees Celsius, with occasional rain. This is the
height of the ski season at the nearby resorts of Portillo
and Farellones.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE
The Chilean currency is the peso ($), with a current
exchange rate of $255 per US dollar. US dollars are
accepted at large hotels, and they can be exchanged at banks
and money exchange shops.
There is also an informal, or ``parallel'', market, where
the current exchange rate is $278 per US dollar.
TOURS
The travel agency offers several tours of Santiago and its
vicinities, including the nearby ski resorts. There are
also post-conference tours of the North and South of Chile,
and to Easter Island. During the conference, there will be
a TURAVION counter, for those interested in signing up for
these tours.
