The Australian National University Supercomputer Facility is hosting a Workshop on Supercomputing in Canberra from 24 - 29 September 1989. The primary purpose of the Workshop is to introduce existing and potential external users to vector programming on the Australian National University's FACOM VP-100 supercomputer. Researchers at Australian universities have access to the FACOM VP-100 through the External Use Scheme. Under this scheme, ten per cent of the time on the supercomputer is donated to other universities. The VP-100 is similar in power to a Cray X-MP. Participants at the Workshop will be expected to work on their own codes with guidance from ANUSF staff. Short courses covering many aspects of high-performance computing will also be given. Attendance at the Workshop will be limited and applications will be subject to review by a selection committee. Accommodation and meals in a residential college on campus will be provided, and funds to assist with travel to and from Canberra will be available. Grants of CPU time on the VP-100 will be allocated to successful applicants. Topics covered will include an introduction to FORTRAN programming on the ANU FACOM systems; remote use of the ANU computer facilities; an overview of high-performance computing; code vectorization and optimization on the VP-100; visualization of scientific data; programming a shared-memory parallel computer; the Australian Academic Research Network; numerical algorithms for vector processors; specialist topics according to demand. Selection of Participants The Workshop is open to fourth-year undergraduates, postgraduates, and members of staff at Australian universities. Selection will be based on the readiness of the applicant to use the FACOM VP-100. Successful applicants must send their code in advance to avoid delays in getting started; the applicant's knowledge of FORTRAN and experience with the code to be ported; maintaining a balanced representation from all Australian universities. Applications will be reviewed by a scientific selection committee at the Australian National University. How to Apply Complete an application form (available from address below) and return it together with a covering letter to the address shown below by 21 July 1989. The covering letter should detail current or planned research; a description of the code to be worked on during the Workshop, including the current operating system and language, along with the memory and disk space requirements to run the code; a statement of your knowledge of FORTRAN programming. Staff members of universities should also send a reprint of a recent publication, while postgraduate and undergraduate students should send a letter of recommendation from a supervisor. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the application by 4 August 1989.
