The Foundation for Human-computer Communication and Language Technology
(SMCT)
recently founded at Tilburg University, The Netherlands
will be fostering a

SMCT:
The symposium is organized by the Foundation for Human-
computer Communication and Language Technology (SMCT),
founded in 1988 with the aim of promoting research in
human-computer communication and language technology.
The primary aim of this symposium is to present some of
the most advanced work on various aspects of language
technology, with an indication of its potential value
for applications.
The SMCT foundation currently has as its main activity
the execution of a 5-year programme of research,
initiated towards the end of 1988, called 'Human-Computer
Communication using Natural Language' (MMC, for short).
This programme is carried out in collaboration between
Tilburg University, Nijmegen University, Eindhoven
Institute for Perception Research (IPO), and Oce
Nederland B.V., with financial support from the Dutch
government through the SPIN agency (the Dutch equivalent
of Alvey) and various industrial sponsors.
The research focusses on fundamental aspects of language
technology in the field of man-machine communication using
natural language. Results of this research will lead to
the description and implementation of human interfaces
to data systems and editorial support environments.
Some practical applications of the research are:
o dialogue systems to knowledge bases
o multimodal natural language user interfaces
o intelligent text and document handling
o language technology based software tools
o automatic translation
