Workshop on Parametric Variation in Germanic and Romance

		       University of Edinburgh
			September 24-26, 1989

			  First announcement

We are planning to hold an informal workshop devoted to Germanic and
Romance syntax with particular emphasis on discussing how word order
and other variations in these languages can be accounted for in a
uniform fashion. We invite 30 or 45 minute papers on these topics. We
expect papers to fall into the following four categories:

	(1) papers on particular phenomena in one or more (related)
languages, spelling out the implications of these phenomena for
grammatical theory

	(2) papers which discuss systematic variation between two or
more languages within the same language family

	(3) papers which address the variation between Germanic and
Romance

	(4) papers which address issues of grammar specification in
light of parametric variation

If you want to submit a paper, please send an abstract (max two pages)
either by regular mail or electronic mail to one of the addresses
below. Abstracts should reach us before August 15. Notification of
acceptance will be sent out before September 1.

We unfortunately have a very restricted budget for this workshop. We
hope to be able to provide lunch, tea and coffee, and possibly crash
space type accommodation, but we don't expect to be able to pay for
travel expenses. Please indicate if you are unable to come unless you
get travel support.

A second announcement with information about inexpensive accommodation
in Edinburgh will be sent to everyone who has expressed interest in
the workshop.

The workshop has been timed to fit in with the autumn meeting of the
Linguistic Association of Great Britain which takes place in
Manchester, September 20-22.

The workshop is organised in connection with the ESPRIT basic research
action Dynamic Interpretation of Natural Language, Task 1.1,
Parametric Variation and Abstract Specification of Linguistic
Structure
