A WORKING CONFERENCE on DATA AND KNOWLEDGE BASE INTEGRATION October 5-6, 1989 University of Keele Staffs. England This first conference on integrating data and knowledge bases is being organised by the Data and Knowledge Engineering (DAKE) Centre at the University of Keele. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES : The programme will be oriented towards industrial and commercial issues. Invited experts will discuss current projects. An important objective of the conference will be to discuss applications which are possible now and the directions of future developments. There will also be an exhibition of industrial demonstrations. WHO SHOULD ATTEND ? Conventional database managers who wish to know how new developments in knowledge-based systems can help them. Knowledge based systems builders and researchers who wish to know how their work is linked with the world of data processing, and what data processing has to teach them. The list of invited speakers includes: Mr. Charles Church (Coopers & Lybrand Associates) Mr. Jim Kielty (TSB Group plc, Technology Division) Prof. Madan Singh (UMIST) CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are invited from workers active in this broad general area. Drafts of not more than 5000 words should be submitted to the organisers by 15th June, 1989. The entire conference proceedings will be video-taped, and the best papers, appended with questions and discussion, will be published after the conference. Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to: Intelligent front ends to database systems; Expert systems for database development; Mixed knowledge and data bases; Database methods for knowledge handling. Areas of interest for applications include: banking, finance, information services, insurance, manufacturing, medicine, retailing, travel and transportation. CALL-FOR-REGISTRATION A Working Conference on DATA AND KNOWLEDGE BASE INTEGRATION October 5-6, 1989 University of Keele England The objective of the conference is to provide a forum for industry and academia to discuss and to debate issues in data and knowledge base in- tegration for industrial applications. To facilitate delegate participa- tion, each presentation will be followed by a scheduled period of discussion. There will also be a panel session. The whole conference proceedings will be tape recorded. We hope each participant will contribute to the discus- sion, and thus make the conference more interesting. The conference is sponsored by both the Data Management and the Expert Systems Specialist Groups of the British Computer Society. Papers to be presented at the conference have been pre-selected. After the conference, the papers will be reviewed again, and the successful ones, with selected transcripts from the taped proceedings, will be published. Each participant will be mailed a copy of this publication in due course. Papers may be divided broadly into the following categories: * Conceptual framework (3 papers) * Logic-oriented paradigms (2 papers) * Object-oriented paradigms (3 papers) * Practical integration issues (3 papers) * Applications (2 papers) * DB/KB Design tools (3 papers) Because of an increasing interest in object-oriented databases, which ac- cording to some experts might provide a good means for the integration of data and knowledge bases, the conference will be preceded by a tutorial on "object-oriented databases - mirage or miracle". This tutorial is treated as a separate event, with a separate fee. The conference has generated a response beyond our initial expectation. Since places are limited, we would advise you to register as early as pos- sible to avoid disappointment. A summary programme is enclosed. Finally a few words about the University of Keele. It is a small Universi- ty but distinguished for its interdisciplinary philosophy in education. The University has recently established an interdisciplinary centre for research and development in Data and Knowledge Engineering (DAKE Centre) where the Computer Science Department (CSD) plays a primary role. The Centre/CSD has major projects in large knowledge bases (including data- bases, distributed data/knowledge bases and cooperating knowledge bases), software engineering and neural networks. Geographically Keele is a University village on the outskirts of Newcastle-under-Lyme, half-way between Birmingham and Manchester. The nearest Airport is Manchester (40 miles), London Heathrow Airport is some 150 miles away. Keele is situated between junctions 15 and 16 of the M6 motorway. The nearest railway station is Stoke-on-Trent (5 miles), which can be reached from London Euston in 1 hour 50 minutes and from Manchester in 40 minutes. Further details will be given when you register.
