Workshop on Parametric Variation in Germanic and Romance University of Edinburgh Centre for Cognitive Science and Department of Artificial Intelligence September 24-26, 1989 Second announcement: September 1, 1989 The University of Edinburgh is hosting a workshop on Germanic and Romance syntax with particular emphasis on discussing how word order and other variations in these languages can be accounted for in a uniform fashion. The workshop has been timed to immediately follow the autumn meeting of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain which takes place at the University of Manchester on September 20-22, 1989. Participants may also register at the registration session at 1:30 on Sunday, September 24. Please let us know your approximate time of arrival at the workshop on the registration form below. Social Outing We plan to go to dinner at Maxie's Bistro and Wine Bar, 32b West Nicholson Street, at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. Any late arrivals to the workshop on Sunday evening can find us there. Accommodation We have reserved a block of rooms at The Pollock Halls of Residence at a cost of 15 pounds per night for a single room, breakfast included. Reservations for accommodation should reach Mike Reape at the address above by September 15. Those who have not sent in a reservation by September 15 can book accommodation on the day at Pollock Halls at the rate of 16.25 (pounds)/night, breakfast included. Although there should be no shortage of accommodation, availability cannot be guaranteed after September 15. We therefore urge reservations to be made by September 15 if at all possible. Participants whose accommodation requests have not arrived in time will be required to pay Pollock Halls directly on arrival in British sterling. Directions The entrance to Pollock Halls is located on Holyrood Park Road on the edge of Holyrood Park. The workshop itself will be held at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, 80 South Bridge. It is roughly 15 minutes walking distance from Pollock Halls. Maps will be sent to all those who register by September 15. Maps will also be available at Pollock Halls. Travel Waverley train station is approximately 10 minutes walking distance from 80 South Bridge and 25 minutes from Pollock Halls. There is a bus from the airport to Waverley station which leaves twice an hour during most times of the day for 2.00. Taxis from the airport to the centre of Edinburgh cost approximately 7.00.
