PROGRAMMABLE GATE ARRAYS

  The Programmable Gate Array (PGA) is a revolutionary new idea in integrated
circuits that reduces the IC manufacturing time from months to minutes and
prototype cost from tens of thousands of dollars to under $100.	 This shortened
product development time represents a dramatic economic opportunity for all
present users of integrated circuits.  Moreover, PGAs open the world of VLSI
technology to a whole new range of entrepreneurs and small businesses who until
now could not afford to use custom components in their low-volume products.

  This symposium on Programmable Gate Arrays will introduce competing PGA
technologies to Canadian industry and academia. It will feature presentations
from key people associated with three of the leading companies in the field:

     o Bill Carter, Director IC Design,
       Xilinx Incorporated
     o Abbas El Gamal, Professor, Stanford University and Chief Scientist,
       Actel Corporation
     o Stan Kopec, Mgr. Strategic Marketing & New Product Planning,
       Altera Corporation

  Following the presentations commercially available PGA development systems
from each of the three companies will be demonstrated.

  PGAs also represent an entirely new area for scientific research.
Local experts from the Universities of Toronto and Waterloo will present an
overview of PGA technology and current research in the field.

  This symposium will be of great interest to computing and engineering
professionals as well as technical and corporate level management developing or
using integrated circuit technology in their products.
