   SECOND NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LAW, COMPUTERS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

       Main theme - The legal implications of computer misuse and abuse

	    Crossmead Conference Centre, University of Exeter, UK
			    15/16th November, 1990
AIM

The main theme of this Conference will be to examine the problems that misuse
and abuse of computers and programs raise for the law. It is intended that
the Conference should at some stage (by means of an invited panel) address the
question of the need for codes of conduct for professionals working in the
overlap areas of law, computer science and AI.

SCOPE

Papers are especially invited on (but not restricted to) the following areas
within the main theme:

   Law Commission report on computer misuse;
   product liability;
   copyright abuse;
   database and knowledge base misuse;
   how to legislate for AI misuse and abuse;
   embodying legislation into AI programs;
   computer-based crime, security and methods of detection and prevention;
   the legal status of AI systems;
   responsibility for AI failures;
   codes and principles of professional conduct and practice.

It is stressed that contributions from prospective authors in other areas of
law, computers and AI will also be considered (e.g. computational
representations of law, ethical implications of legal expert systems).

The Conference will last from lunchtime on Thursday until late afternoon on
Friday. Accommodation at the Conference Centre, plus full board (two lunches,
teas, dinner and breakfast) will be between 50 and 60 pounds. Registration
forms and further details can be obtained from the Conference Organizer.

SUBMISSION

Papers of less than 5000 words in length and including an abstract of less
that 200 words should be sent to either of the local Academic Contacts by 30th
