HYPERTEXT STANDARDIZATION WORKSHOP Sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Computer Systems Laboratory (NCSL) Location Gaithersburg, Maryland 16-18 January 1990 Hypertext and Hypermedia technologies have reached the point where it makes sense to consider their potential for formal standardization. A number of authors have stated requirements for hypertext standards and some have offered definitions and initial specifications for consideration. In several cases, specialized standardization efforts have already been initiated through interested organizations. PURPOSE: This workshop will provide a forum for presentation of existing and proposed approaches to hypertext standardization in a setting where authors can expect immediate feedback and possible action on their ideas. GOALS: Workshop goals are to consider hypertext system definitions, to identify viable approaches for pursuing standards, to seek commonality among alternatives wherever possible, and to make progress towards a coordinated plan for standards development, i.e., a hypertext reference model. This reference model would show some of the important topics of a hypertext standard, and how they fit together. A workshop proceedings will feature contributed papers selected for presentation, as well as the deliberations and conclusions of working groups set up in response. Proceedings will be distributed at a later date. An additional workshop output could be the initial draft of a candidate hypertext reference model and an organizational structure for its further development. TOPICS OF INTEREST: Discussions will focus on but are not restricted to the following: Global Issues: Abstract Specifications Classification Schemes Interface Techniques Exchange Mechanisms What's Appropriate for Standardization? Specific Issues: Specific Requirements Definitions Component Specifications Integration with Existing Standards Hypertext Standardization: The Wisdom of It? Is It Premature? FORMAT: TUESDAY, JANUARY 16 o Registration from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM o Workshop will begin promptly at 9:00 AM with Welcome by NIST/NCSL and short presentations on standardization processes and on what comprises a reference model, followed by presentations of selected papers from those contributed for consideration. o The Workshop will break into appropriate follow-on Working Group sessions, to discuss topics in depth, and to present their results in Plenary. o Directly after Workshop hours, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, there will be a reception at the Marriott Hotel, where informal discussion may continue. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17 o Workshop will convene in Plenary session at 9:00 AM. o Remaining papers and interim results from Tuesday's Working Group sessions will be presented. o Continuing and possibly newly-formed Working Groups will have time to discuss topics and present any conclusions back to the Plenary session. o Wednesday evening is left unstructured. THURSDAY, JANUARY 19 o Workshop will convene in Plenary session at 9:00 AM. o Working Group conclusions will be presented and discussion will be follow on where to go from here. o Workshop will close at Noon. --------------------------------------------------------------- + REGISTRATION CARD + Amount Remitted: $ 75 NIST/Hypertext Standardization + Form of Payment: Workshop + __Check.
