Dear Colleague, Like you, I have attended my share of conferences and presentations on campus networking. This spring, Lafayette College will be sponsoring a very different kind of conference on networking at colleges and universities. Most conferences are centered around the technical aspects of the project; i.e., how many xyz's get attached to what number of abc's to achieve q.56 protocols and how much does it all cost. I've stopped going to those! We are networking our campus as many other schools have done or are in the process of doing. The question that arises over and over is "what applications are we going to run on the network?" These applications are what networking is all about. We're beyond electronic mail and file- sharing as the sole justification for the expense of networking. The conference is aimed at networking applications, so it is not specific to a token ring or ethernet network, an IBM or a VAX server or PC's or Macintosh's attached to the system. It will provide a forum for exchanging information about what other schools have done with their networks. It might include sharing of actual code for those interested. Conference attendees will include computing people, faculty and students. Projects I have seen and heard about include: ON-LINE ENCYCLOPEDIAS FORMS MANAGEMENT on-line training and help ON-LINE CLASSES AND DISCUSSIONS CAMPUS EVENTS RECREATION AUTOMATING OF STUDENT SERVICES: INTER- AND INTRA-CAMPUS NEWS SYSTEMS CAREER PLANNING REGISTRATION STUDENT ACCOUNTS There are plenty of other applications- that's why I would like to invite you to share yours! We are currently accepting abstracts for presentations and panels at the conference. I would like to have the abstracts here by February 15 so presenters can be notified in plenty of time to prepare for the conference. Abstracts can be sent via postal or electronic mail. The registration fees and on-campus housing fees will be waived for anyone participating in a presentation or panel discussion. The conference will take place here at Lafayette in Easton, Pennsylvania about 90 minutes from New York and Philadelphia. The Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton airport is about 20 minutes away. The dates are June 14 through 16. More information will follow concerning housing and registration. If you have any questions about the conference or an idea for a presentation, please call me at 215-250-5505. You can also reach me via BITNET at LLOY@LAFAYACS. I look forward to hearing from you. -- My God, look at the suits! -Karl
