[net.bugs.uucp] USG UUCP bugs will be fixed

lsc (12/03/82)

As a member of unix development lab, part of my efforts have been
devoted to the care and feeding of UUCP and related software (post 5.0).
I am not sure how much information I am allowed to reveal, but I
will say a great deal of effort has been devoted to cleaning up
the majority of UUCP bugs. Netnews has been a valuable aid in
this regard. All can be assured that every bug that has crossed
the net within the last 6 months has been corrected.
The 5.0 USG version of UUCP represents the latest effort
to enhance UUCP. ( I have been told that UUCP has not been touched
for quite awhile - in a major way at least). 5.0 UUCP features
include new job tracking capabilities, enhanced statistics via
UUSTAT, and multihop routing. I don't doubt that new bugs will appear,
as the above enhancements required significant additions and
changes to UUCP. I will continue to monitor the net and see how
well 5.0 is fairing. I do not know how soon this debugged version
of UUCP (5.? or 6.0) will be available, but I will make an effort
to push it out the door as soon as possible.
In any event, I just wanted to point out that the USG is paying
attention to the net and is making an effort to address the problems
and suggestions mentioned there. The next release of UUCP should
probably be the most robust version available anywhere.
				Thankyou for you help,
