CALL FOR PAPERS (Sorry for short notice - mason@tmsoft.uucp)
Second Canadian Conference on the
Foundations and Applications of General Science Theory:
Transdisciplinary Knowledge Structures, and Curriculum Innovation
Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto, Ontario,
May 24 and 25, 1990.
one page abstract by February 28, 1990
THE PROBLEM: Today, we suffer from information overload in the
classroom or in the workplace. Introductory textbooks are far too
long, and the novice struggles to cope with the offerings of a single,
narrow discipline. The expert specialists we train in our
institutions of higher learning lack the ability to communicate
effectively with each other, and thus a wealth of useful knowledge is
rendered inaccessible to the decision makers at any level of
government, or management.
THE SOLUTION: Let us cultivate knowledge which is common to all
disciplines. In education or at work let us create and use universal
concepts , and universal knowledge structures as much as possible, and
those of special scope only as much as necessary. ) Our language
operates that way: we speak of 'furniture' when it is allowable to
generalize, and of 'table' or 'chair' only when it is necessary to
differentiate. ) For the purpose of effective learning let us develop
rational, conceptual structures of our knowledge to improve the
traditional, historically grown curriculum.
PARTICIPANTS: Teachers, researchers, curriculum advisors, and graduate
students in any branch of knowledge. All those with an interest in
philosophy of education, interdisciplinary studies, or curriculum
development.
