		        ONE DAY WORKSHOP

REPRESENTING KNOWLEDGE IN MEDICAL DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS

A growing number of researchers are working to apply research paradigms
that have been developed in Artificial Intelligence to several
areas of medicine. A particular area of interest in medical applications
is that of decision support systems to assist in the diagnosis,
treatment, and the general understanding of medical problems.
With the constantly escalating costs of medical
care, systems that can aid the physician in making informed decisions
should prove to be significant time (and money) savers.

The purpose of this workshop is to examine the unique aspects of
representing knowledge in these medical decision support
systems. Under this umbrella, two main focus areas will be
addressed.

The first focus area deals with the unique aspects of acquiring the
knowledge for medical decision support systems. What makes this
type of knowledge elicitation different from knowledge acquisition
for other non-medical expert systems? Or is there a difference?
Papers that address automated or semi-automated knowledge acquisition
techniques are strongly encouraged, including the application of
machine learning for knowledge acquisition.

The second focus area is the knowledge representation itself. New
techniques for addressing problems unique to medical decision making
are encouraged. How can you address the temporal nature of medical
data in knowledge representation? How can proper knowledge representation
help in the handling of uncertainty? How can model based systems be
used for medical decision making? What kinds of knowledge bases,
databases or other representations will be useful for collecting and
presenting the ever-increasing volume of information to practitioners
and researchers?

The workshop is open to anyone interested in these issues. Participants
wishing to attend the workshop should submit three copies of a
1-2 page research summary including a list of relevant publications,
along with a phone number and an electronic mail address if possible.
Persons wishing to make presentations at the workshop should submit
three copies of a position paper or extended abstract
(maximum length: 5 pages) addressing one of the above topics
or a closely related topic. In order to enhance the interactive
nature of the workshop, 1-2 page proposals for panel discussions
are also encouraged.

Due to space limitations, there will be a maximum of
35 participants for the workshop, with approximately half of
the participants making a presentations of their papers. Time
will be allocated for general discussion of the topics as well.
The workshop papers will be distributed to all participants.
papers will be distributed to all participants. It is anticipated that a
summary of the workshop will appear in an appropriate journal.

Electronic mail submissions are STRONGLY suggested, if possible.
