[talk.religion.newage] Pagan newsgroup

gt1020a@prism.gatech.EDU (Ken Yousten) (02/03/90)

I just wonder if it will be worthwhile. I've only been reading the net for
a year and a half or so, not very long, but long enough to see a few things.

I am not sure that the Usenet community is capable of holding an intelligent,
sincere discussion for very long. Oh, some newsgroups manage it for weeks, or
even months, at a time. But, soon enough, someone who doesn't really care
about the topic, someone who measures their self-worth as their ability to
make others unhappy, will feel the need to screw it up for everyone else.
Naive, well-meaning readers will follow them up, and it will snowball.

I'm on a paganism mailing list or two, and I really don't think a newsgroup
could possibly provide more than them. I voted yes on t.r.p (mod), but don't
think I'll vote yes on any more groups like this. Of course, this doesn't
mean I'll vote no, I'll probably just ignore vote and group (if it wins)
alike. Unless, of course, Tim Maroney takes a position, in which case I will
oppose him. :)

Maybe alt.pagan would be best. After all, gatech doesn't offer alt.* groups,
so all those twits will be free to posture and proselytize and flame all they
want, and I won't even be tempted to look in....
