Can anyone point me to or fill me in on details of the ~$1500 marking engine plus minimal interface laser printer promised by Atari for later this year? Any other comparable? Thanks uw-beaver!june!crg

I saw the Atari Laser Printer at the Great Lakes Atari Expo in Buffalo a couple of weeks ago. It's not a Canon engine (they wouldn't say whose it was). It has the standard 300x300 dpi 8 page/minute specs that most of thse printers share. You *need* an Atari 520ST for Diablo 630 emulation output, and a 2 meg or better Atari ST (modified 520 or 1040 or wait for the new Atari Mega series) for full graphics output. The cost will be $1500 for the printer, interface, software, initial supply of toner, etc. The toner is seperately replaceable from the drum (4000 copies) and the drum is about 10000 copies (if I remember correctly). At the very moment Atari has no plans for PostScript support. They hinted at some DDL, but didn't say whose. Delivery is sometime between June and September. If you want to use it with another brand of computer, you'll still need the ST to drive it. The main difference between this and other laser printers is that the CPU to generate the raster is outboard (DMA on the ST) instead of inboard (the internal Mac in the LaserWriter). Bruce D.
