[net.bugs.uucp] How to make uucp secure on 4.1bsd?

Could someone please enlighten me on how to make uucp half-way secure
on a 4.1bsd system?  As distributed, the spool directory was mode 777
and the spool files are all created 666.  I don't see any reason why
that shouldn't be 755 and 600, but don't know how to go about it.
