[comp.laser-printers] Laserwriter problem in the APOLLO

SEB@CRNLNS.BITNET (07/10/87)

Ryan,

(I am posting this to "laser-lovers" because the return address
in the copy of your message that I received was rejected:
"sdsu!ryan@brillig.umd.edu". In the future, please be sure to
provide your network address as part of your message.)

I was getting the same symptom from our Apple LaserWriter running
from VAX/VMS: what looked like perfectly legal commands were getting
rejected when the printer was run at 9600 baud.
My conclusion was that it was caused by flow-control characters happening
right in the middle of an otherwise legal PostScript command.
This was happening when I was using a terminal emulation
program, and was running in "executive" mode on the printer.
The Vax just couldn't keep up with the 9600 baud input from the
printer, and had to send x-off/x-on commands.

When I started using a spooler that didn't tell the printer to
run in "executive" mode, so the printer wasn't echoing the commands back,
the problem went away.

Is there any chance that your spooler is using "executive" mode,
perhaps for data transmission verification?

You might try turning off host sync.

I hope this helps.
