Sorry if this is old hat, but I haven't seen these questions asked while
I've been reading.
We are considering purchasing a laser-printer for our Unix machine (a
Pyramid 90x).
Conditions it must meet:
(A) Cost under $2000 for the unit itself; we have very little
money for this.
(B) Work off this machine.
(C) Work with troff input files. Other packages, such as TeX are
ok as secondary formatters, but if there's no troff output
filter forget it. Pyramid kindly has both old and new (di-)
troff if that helps matters.
My questions are:
(1) What units meet these criteria?
(2) We can get an HP LaserJet II for $1500 -- but will it meet
criteria B and C? Is there a software package to convert
troff output to LJII input?
(3) Is there a PostScript compatible printer for < $2K?
We have a PostScript printer already [this is to be a second
laserprinter] and have the TranScript package; but another
LaserWriter would cost too much.
(4) What are the flaws of the LJII -- e.g., why is it half the price
of a similar PostScript printer (judging from adds in
Byte, etc.)?
(5) Where would be some (a) recent, (b) comparative and (c) honest
literature on such printers? (As in specific article
