This past Monday (10 August), the laser printer hooked up to the University's VAXcluster bit the big one. (It's a DEC LN01 with a Talaris 1200 "brain" retro-fitted.) After numerous problems, including a two-month long period of down time, it was decided last month (when it last broke down) that if it breaks down again, it would not be repaired. Sure enough, it did this Monday. I am now one of several people who have a desire to take the unit to the roof of our computing center and drop it (just the brain; I think the LN01 may still be usable). What I'd like to know is whether or not we are the only installation to be unsatisfied with the performance of the Talaris Systems 1200. The laser printer has had a reasonably heavy load, until we started charging for laser printing. The printer has been moved a few times since we obtained it. I am not completely sure if these factors had anything to do with its early demise, or if it was crufty to begin with. We have since replaced it with a DEC PrintServer 40, and we are pleased with its performance. The only problem we had with it so far is that one of the operators leaned against the output tray and broke it. I am willing to summarize mailed responses. - - - - - - - - ____ ^ ____ Jim Poltrone (The USENET Junkie) |_ _|/ \|_ _| \ \/ \/ / uucp: [decvax,watmath,rocksanne]!sunybcs!ugpoltr1 \/ ^ \/ Internet: ugpoltr1@joey.cs.buffalo.edu / / \ \ acsgjjp@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu / /___\ \ Bitnet: ACSGJJP@UBVMS, UGPOLTR1@SUNYBCS /___________\ _/ /_ _\ \_ "Do you realise...this world is totally fugazi?!" |_____| |_____| --Marillion
