[net.news.group] Why net.india should be created

bala@CS-Mordred (Bala Krishnamurthy) (01/25/85)

Hi there,

This is Bala Krishnamurthy, the originator of the suggestion for
net.india. I have been sitting back reading the flames and
	supportive messages.
Finally, some one has got it right. Yes, he has captured the
essence of my posting. Rick Furuta (furuta@uw-beaver)
	[22-Jan-1985 message id <482@uw-beaver>].

A virtual distribution, is a good phrase. I was getting tired of
redistributing mail to other Indian friends about news from back
home. This thing goes on all the time - there are mailing lists
for the alumni of a particular institution in India (more than
one) - I don't think this is the right way to do it. Usenet is the
place. Many have suggested the creation of net.nlang.india - I am
not so sure about that. But I realize the problem of creating and
maintaining a top level list - I leave it to the powers that be
to decide it. I think net.india should be given a try, if nothing
	else.

And yes, there is a large population of Indian students in America.
CS departments that have a large collection of Indian
grad students: Maryland, UWisc, UTexas, Washington
(going from east to west - and this is just a sample)
Organizations on Usenet have representatives too (e.g. Bell Labs).

One might not be able to come to this conclusion by the relatively
few postings supporting the group (laziness is the cause) - I
didn't count - about 15 so far (?). But as Rick says we need to
give it a try. All those in favour - create the net!

I appreciate all the supporting letters I received.
Am still willing to answer any questions about motives for this.
Send *me* mail if you think it would not be of interest to the rest
of the net readers.

Cheers,
bala

Hey Guys,
did you know that one of the gang of 4 of the Emergency
days, Bansi Lal, is the Railway minister now just to keep Bhajan
Lal (Haryana's chief minister) in check?! The phrase "ulta chor
kothwal ko dante" comes to mind.
************ this is just a sample. ****************************

PLEASE DO NOT POST ITEMS LIKE THIS IN NEWS.GROUP.
WAIT TILL NET.INDIA IS CREATED.

THANKS!

Supposing we create a group called net.culture which could be used to discuss
cultures of nations around the world?

Then we could subgroup it with net.culture.india, and any other cultures that
we wanted.

I realize it is difficult to rename newsgroups, but if we had a little coop-
eration from other news admins maybe they could move all their files from
net.nlang.* to net.culture.*.

Anyhow, it's an idea.

Before net.whatever.india is created (where whatever = * including the null
string) could we see some evidence of India-related traffic in another news-
group, say net.misc?
