There was quite a bit of action in the PostScript arena at the Seybold conference this week. Phoenix formally announced their PostScript clone, with an agreement with Bell and Howell to develop a high-speed PostScript compatible controller. They are also planning on video PostScript and color capabilities. Bitstream was active as the font supplier for five or six of the PostScript clone makers, including Phoenix, Control-C, and Printware. They are licensing a code module for handling their fonts that can be bundled with PostScript compatible controllers. Adobe showed a color PostScript printer (in a raw, development form) that will be manufactured and marketed by QMS. It is based on thermal-transfer technology, and will be available early next year. Cost is expected to be around $20K. Adobe also announced a PostScript screen previewer that is will be licensing to OEMs just as they are licensing PostScript now. Steve Jobs said that Next's workstations will run this product. Pat Wood Editor, The PostScript Language Journal Pipeline Associates, Inc. bellcore!phw5!phw flash.bellcore.com!phw5!phw
