One of the previous bulletin board notes requested information about the IBM Quietwriter III. If it is of any value, the Quietwriter III is one of the two printers (the other is the IBM Proprinter), that is being specifically supported by IBM in DOS 3.30. What this means is that the CONFIG.SYS file can make use of a new command called PRINTER.SYS which allows international character sets to be quickly used and coordinated between the video display, keyboard, and printer. This may be important if you are in a situation where the character codes and foreign keyboards become common place. PRINTER.SYS however is of little value when using the standards and default values as specified in the United States codes. DOS 3.30 will only support the IBM Quietwriter III, the IBM Proprinter, or other printers which emulate either of these two printer. Incidentally, part of the coding system is built into the printer and is thus not software orientated. There is an upcomming publication by Que called DOS QueCards which will contain detailed information about using DOS with the Quietwriter III.
