[comp.laser-printers] Problems with Apple LaserWriter hooked into System V Unix system

chris@UMBC3.UMD.EDU (Chris Schanzle) (04/05/88)

Hey gang -

We've got an Apple Laserwriter here that we want to integrate
into our Silicon Graphics 3030 workstation (a System V machine). I've
successfully made the proper cable, made a "dumb" driver for "lp", set
the switch on the Laserwriter to "special" (so it doesn't interpret
things as postscript), and got some bad output. :-(

All we want to do (at this point) is get it to print standard
text files neatly. Unfortunately, the top and/or bottom line on the
page usually gets the tops of the letters chopped in half (or quarter,
or just a tiny bit). This is not acceptable, nor what I expected from
the manuals.

Are there some special Escape codes I could send the Diablo
610 emulation to give proper top/bottom margins on the page? One ugly
solution (kludge) would be to have EVERY document have form-feeds at
the bottom of each page, but that seems pretty drastic (not to mention
restrictive). Alternatively, is there any software out there that can
deal with the Laserwriter properly from System V Unix (either Diablo
610 emulation mode OR converting text documents to postscript - I
don't care, as long as it looks good!)?

Our other problem is probably more SGI specific - every 5 to
15 minutes the laserwriter spits out a blank page. Why? It will do
this until I pull the serial plug out of the printer. Seems like line
printer scheduler is sending out line feeds at a very slow rate. Any
helpful hints graciously accepted.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Please mail info to me
directly as I don't subscribe regularly to all of the above groups.
