[comp.laser-printers] Ethernet, Duplex, and Postscript

km@emory.UUCP (Ken Mandelberg) (05/13/88)

I am looking for a relatively low cost laserprinter that supports
Postscript (or a clone of it), Duplex printing, and has an ethernet
interface. Failing that I would be interested in any Postscript printer
with at least one of duplex or ethernet.

Of course I know how to get around the need for an ethernet interface
by either using a bridge on Appletalk or a Unix ethernet host via
rs232. I was hoping for a direct connection this next time around.

I believe that Imagen has solutions of this type. However, the last
time I checked it seemed that their lowest cost solution was about
triple the cost of what one of the new highend Apple Laserwriters would
cost us, with about the same speed. (This factors in a high academic
discount from Apple). The cost factor seemed too high to justify
duplex and ethernet.

I know Diconix has duplex inkjet, but it has no network interface at
all (just RS232 and parallel).

I also know that Cannon has showed an inexpensive duplex engine, fairly
comparable to the popular SX in speed and cost. This is relatively new
and I haven't seen anyone announce a printer containing it.

Can anyone can add any information on existing or upcoming Postscript
printers with either duplex or ethernet?

Ken,

After much searching of the market place the only printer which I have
found to fit your bill is the IMAGEN XP7320 w/ UltraScript. The only
problem with it is the price. It was going to cost upwards of $40K by
the time all was said and done..

We have; however; bought a DICONIX Dijit 1 and solved the network
problem by hanging it off a CISCO terminal server. Give me a yell if
you want the gruesom details.

cheers

Imagen has an Ethernet/PostScript/Duplex printer that uses a Ricoh
engine. We've got the Diconix and barring some initial problems
where they replaced the whole printer, it seems to work pretty
quickly, but is very sensitive to the type of paper you use in it.
Of the various run of the mill copier papers we tend to use in the
various printers here, we've found that some cause the ink to smear
pretty bad.
