[comp.laser-printers] NEC LC-890

bossert@thalatta.COM (John Bossert) (06/02/88)

Having seen >5 requests for information on this printer, I thought I'd post
directly to the mailing list. We are using a NEC LC-890 with very good results.

Goodness:

1) The print quality seems significantly better than that of a Laserwriter.
2) 35 fonts (ala Laserwriter+)
3) 2 paper bins, 250 sheets each. Supposedly software selectable, but we've not
gotten around to verifying that it works...
4) Good price (3500.00 for us)
5) Excellent support from NEC. We had a few problems initially which were resolved
often within HOURS. I can't compliment their field support enough.

Badness(?):

1) Seems to eat toner. We went through one "cartridge" at ~2500 pages. We use
our printer in a "bursty" mode - lots of pages, then no use for days.

2) Watch out for marginal signal strength on the serial port. We needed to replace
the motherboard on the printer because it would drop Xon/Xoff at baud rates
greater than 2400. VERY prompt support from NEC.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask specific questions.
