[comp.laser-printers] IBM-PC --> Apple LaserWriter

ba@pbhyg.PacBell.COM (Behzad Alavi) (05/07/88)

I have been trying to directly connect an IBM-PC (XT)
or PS-2 to an Apple LaserWriter. Using the COM1: port,
I have tried a straight db25 serial connection plus
         the following:

                  1 ------ 1
                  2 ------ 3
                  3 ------ 2

               4 & 5 4 & 5

                  7 ------ 7

             6 & 8 & 20 6 & 8 & 20

I have not yet been able to print a vanilla ASCII file.
If you could e-mail the right patch configuration, I
          really appreciate it.

After much agonizing experimentation, we were able to successfully
connect an IBM-AT compatible (Compaq) to the Apple L/W with the
following pin configuration:

	Compaq L/W

	1 8
	2 2
	3 3
	4 20
	5 7
	6 6
	7 4
	8 5
	9 None

Notes: Compaq had 9 pin serial port, L/W had 25 pin.
L/W must be shut down when changing the 4 position
switch on the back of the L/W from PS to ascii.

Hope this is of some assistance.

IBM's stock serial port does not use a DB-25. The DB-25 on that
card is a parallel port. You want to use the DB-9 (which they also
use for the monitor, this is fun, but at least it's the opposite sex).

I am using an IBM clone ( a Zenith ) to print using an Apple LaserWriter.
We use a "null modem cable", set the COM port to 9600, set the switch on the
back of the LaserWriter to 9600, and route the printout to the COM.

The cable you described should work but it does not have all the handshaking
that I believe a "null modem cable" has.

We use this configuration to print regular ascii files, WordPerfect files, and
PageMaker files.

Try: Printer XT DB-25P AT DB-9P
                   1 1 1
                   2 3 2
                   3 2 3
                   7 7 5
                  20 5&6 6&8

You also must set the printer to be a DTR handshake unless you are
running an application on the PC that understands XON/XOFF.

Good-Luck

The minimum hook-up that will work is:

	2	3
	3	2
	6	20
	7	7
	20	6

(The printer doesn't need to see the signal from pin 20 (DTR)
on pin 6 (DSR), but the PC _DOES_).

I am informed by sa tech who should know that only _ONE_ end of
the wire attached to Pin 1 should be connected. He said something about
"ground loops" if both Pin 1 & Pin 7 had wires connected . . .
