honey@down.UUCP (01/21/84)
this note started out in net.unix-wizards, but it belongs here. (if this group is not gatewayed to arpa, sorry -- they'll have to learn how to uucp.) besides, i'm not replying to the substance of the request (USERFILE setup for varying levels of protection); there was once a time when i could have helped out on this problem, but my USERFILE days are behind me. (i'll bet, though, that nowitz still remembers.) as those who attended dave's talk this morning know, this was one of the issues that we addressed in the uucp of the future. ber asserts that the primary advantage of nowitz's PERMISSIONS is the ability to configure a group of machines to function like a local net, while at the same time appearing to the world as the last great fascist. on down, for example, i have a local bin filled with uux scripts (cifplot, vtroff, imprint and the like) -- outsiders need not apply. furthermore, the ability to use distinct site names within a group, while using a common name when talking to the world provides for some interesting ideas regarding gateways (which dave mentioned in passing). and if someone teaches uux how to mess with servers, using spooling as a last resort, it and uuxqt will continue to play an important role in local nets. peter honeyman
