Sorry if this has been discussed recently... What are the current recommendations for a high-quality (as close to photo-typesetting as possible) Postscript printer for under $8000 ? Are any "good enough" for most publishing applications ? The standard 300x300dpi seems to be borderline for my project. And it seems to look worse, once it is offset printed (anybody concur ?). Is 400x400dpi really much better when offset printed ? Has anyone tried LaserMax ? or LaserSmith ? LaserMax has a 1000x400dpi laser printer for $7500. LaserSmith has 415x415dpi for $4000 and 830x413dpi for $6000. A number of other companies have 400x400dpi (Genicom, NewGen). We can't afford Varityper (600x600 at $17,000) or Linotype. Will we have to resort to phototypesetting on the outside ? (roughly $5/page) What are the current faves at 300x300dpi ? Do people still like Apple Laserwriters ? How about the NEC ? or the QMS ? If anyone out there has experience with DTP (desktop publishing), say, produced a magazine or a book, starting from computer and all the way through to printers and binding, I'd appreciate some advice as well. We're thinking of going with Ventura or Pagemaker. Thanks. Please email responses. Cheers, Dan Ts'o 212-570-7671 Dept.
