[comp.laser-printers] What printer for Mac, PC, Atari and UNIX

[ I'm sorry to post another "What to buy?" question but I couldn't
tell what was the "correct" place. If this is the wrong place,
please tell me where I should post this. ]

I would ideally like to get a laser printer that I could use with
all the systems in the Subject line, running (at least) the
following applications:

Mac - Pagemaker, MS Word, Draw, MacProject etc.
	PC - Word Perfect
Atari ST - Word Perfect, ?? Desktop Publishing?
UNIX System V - general text, nroff, troff?

Is there a beast that would work OK in all these environments
in the HP Laserjet type price range? I have never setup a
laser printer before except for a Laserwriter on a Mac.

How difficult is it to use a non-Apple non-PS printer
on a Mac? What do you need to do it?

In the PC and Atari, is the printer faster using the Centronics
port or serial port? Do you normally need an "Epson" emulater
for most applications? What printers have this built-in?

Under UNIX, do you ordinarilly use an HP-type printer in one
of the "ASCII printer" emulation modes? Can troff be set up
on a HP LJ type printer?

What about durability and maintentance? How often do the
printers need stuff in real life, as opposed to what the
sales literature says?
