[comp.laser-printers] Has anyone come across an Ethernet printer?

brian@t2ns1.gcs.co.nz (11/08/89)

Hi y'all.

The setup we have in our office would be perfect for an ethernet
printer - if such a beast does exist.

We have 3 minis on the same lan that would just looove to use the same
printer. We're running TCP/IP and have 1 x HP Laserjet II, and we're
looking at buying a Brother HL8 (depending on whether it works with this
idea!).

So: Has anyone out there found/used/sold a printer/board to run on
enet? I assume it would have to be semi-intelligent to recognise
    station names, addresses etc.
Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

At our university we have all our printers sitting on ethernet
addresses, routed by a terminal server (BRIDGE). A simple filter
uses the yp map for the hosts, to lookup the addresses of the
printer names given as arguments, or other ethernet hosts,
and link to them via sockets. Depending on the current cost of the
hardware, this might be a simple and neat solution for your office.
