[comp.laser-printers] XT-compatible and HP Laser Jet IIP

dong@CS.UCLA.EDU (Dong-Liang Sheu) (01/25/90)

I have an IBM-XT compatible (slow but reliable). I want to
give away my Epson and buy an HP Laser Jet II P. My concerns
are:

0. Is my five-year-old-XT too old to drive the new HP laser jet II P?
1. Can I simply use the port for my Epson to drive the HP?
2. Do I need any software other than "copy ascii-file lpt1:"?
3. Do I have to use "mode" command? If so, what are the parameters?
4. Are there any switches inside HP which need to be adjusted?

If there are netters who are successful in using XT to drive HP LJIIP
I will feel confident in buying one. Thanks for your attention.

Other than the power supply problem on the IIP and fitting the bottom
tray on the replacement IIP, we had no problems running on an XT
clone--Leading Edge.

You might want to be able to swap your IIP if it is one of the one's
with the bad triac's rather than have to wait for it be be repaired.
Please refer to other articles on the power supply (triac) problems.

I would not hesitate to buy more IIP's, but with the availablity of
the III, the II's should come down in price and you can do more with
them, i.e., add killer 3rd party cards to it.

We have a HP LazerJet IIP running on a XT and one on a AT.
Both are set the same, no switch setting and they are connected
to parallel ports on the computers. I'm not great on PC's so
can't tell you more about using them direct as I never have. I
use ours with publishing programs.
