A department here at Acadia has an Apple LaserWriter hooked up to an Appletalk network allowing users to print to the printer from both Macs and PCs (via Novell). Up until now, usage has been controlled by the honor system. That is, anyone who prints to it is supposed to report how much he has printed. As usual, this scheme isn't working. I told him that the only way I knew of that could solve the problem for both Macs and PCs is one of the card reader devices that requires users to insert a card into the device before it allows the printer to print anything. I know I have heard of several places that use this technique with mixed results. I would like to hear from anyone using this method, what card reader you are using, how much it cost, does it work, etc. I'm not crazy about the devices myself but... Any information would be greatly appreciated. -- Paul H.
