This isn't really a bug, but an undocumented feature. In 4.1bsd, if you create a file named .hushlogin in a user's home directory, that user won't see the message of the day (/etc/motd). If your motd is long, or even if it isn't, you may want to create such a file in uucp's home directory. This will save a bit of time, both cpu and connect. It will also save you some embarassment if you happen to put the phrase "Shere" in your /etc/motd.
