We have an Imagen 7200 that is ~6 months old but has been giving us some problems lately. It looks like we might get another printer, and personally (since I'm the person who's maintaining the software) I hope we get something at least software compatible at the nroff/troff level, such that macro X looks the same on either printer. Of course the easiest approach is to get another Imagen; however, since it's been down a couple times in the last month, users are clamorring for a more reliable machine. My question to the net is do you have any suggestions for a heavy duty printer? I'm talking major output levels here, we don't think an HP/Apple is up to the task. Anyone else have a 7200? How's it been holding up? What kind of load have you put on it (we sometimes run hundreds of pages a day; sometimes I burn off that much). Doug Schwartz Sequent ...!tektronix!ogcvax!sequent!dougs

I am interested in buying a laser printer that will understand Postscript but would like to retain compatibility with the HP LJII that we already have. There seem to be two possibilities, either buy another LJII with the QMS JetScript card, or buy a Postscript printer with HP emulation like the LaserWriter NTX or the QMS810. Can anyone advise me on the best course of action? Is there any advantage in the "software" solution used by the JetScript card, like possibility of updates of the Postscript driver. Or is it better (for instance for purposes of speed) to have a ROM-based system? Cost is also a factor for us. Thanks for any help anyone can give me Martin Reddington reddingt@dm0mpb51

We are currently using HP II's and IID's in-house (among other printers), but want to increase our Post Script capability. I have read the postings about the Data Products and HP cartridges; and have had limited success with them ourselves. I would like to go with something more robust and consistent, good speed, and that can operate in dual mode (standard and PostScript), but in a price range that is comparable with HP's. Even the HPII's get up there in price when you add the cartridge and extra memory. We like the Apple NTX's, but would like to do better on price. I am considering QMS's but have no feedback on their less- than-high-speed models. Of course quality has to be taken into account, too, and if it were the sole consideration, NTX's would be a good choice, since we have some of these that we have _really_ put through their paces and they are holding up beautifully. I'm sure this has been discussed before I began reading this newsgroup, so excuse the repeat. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated, especially feedback on QMS. mark -- ============================================================================== |Mark Riley !uunet!sco!markr| |Manager, Computer Services markr@sco.COM | |The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc.
