[comp.laser-printers] Postscript

jas@mulga.OZ.AU (John Shepherd) (06/23/87)

I'm sure this question has been asked a few times already, so if anyone
has a summary could they please mail it to me ....

We are interested in looking at fairly heavy-duty and decent quality
Postscript laser printers. We already have a number of Laserwriters,
but would also like a printer for producing high-quality documents.

Postscript is a must, and the price can be anything from Laserwriter
price and up to considerably more.

The details I would like are:
(1) initial cost
(2) speed ratings (pages per minute)
(3) robustnes rating (pages per month)
(4) cost of cartridges/rate of cartridge replacement
(5) maintenance charges

If a good summary comes my way, or I accumulate one, I will repost it
to this group.

Thanks in advance, jas

Rumor has it that HP now has a plug in cartridge to do emulation on the
Series II (postscript). It is supposed to be faster and better than
Pacific Data. Anyone have any info? Called around to the mail-order houses
and they are in the dark, having only been rumorized themselves.

Offhand, I know about three postscript cartridges for the II/IIP:

    1) Pacific Data by Pacific Data (req. 2.5 meg. printer memory)
    1) HP Postscript by Adobe (req. 2.5 meg)
    1) JetScript by Jet (req. 1.5 meg)

I don't have any info on comparible speed performance, but obviously
the JetScript cart only requires a 1 meg upgrade...

HP has a PostScript cartridge for the IIP, IID, and III. It is shipping now for
$695. Adobe announced a $495 cartridge for the II that will ship sometime next
week. I haven't tested them yet, but have review units coming (as well as all
of the new Pacific Page cartridges)...
