I'm getting ready to buy a laser printer real soon, and while I want PostScript, I don't necessarily want to pay for a lot of speed. The TI Microlaser PS is available from Boffin Ltd. for around $2100; now there is a TI Microlaser PS17 which is even cheaper, and only has 17 font families, instead of the 35 in the Microlaser PS. Does anyone have any experience with either of the TI Microlaser printers? Consumable costs and availability? Quality of print? (I asked TI if they could send me a print sample, and they said they didn't send that out with sales literature -- which is a fault with a number of printer makers, I've noticed). Which 17 font families are included with the PS17? Does anyone have any really cheap sources for either printer? -- Clayton E. My only gripe is the documentation (lack of). I am told that you can switch from HP to PostScript and back by sending the correct escape codes. This would be great for us as I could then hack the lp scripts to do this on the fly. However the codes are not documented ! If anybody knows how to do this please let me know. In return I will write an lp script to do it automagicaly and post it to the net. -- John Pettitt, Specialix International, Email: jpp@specialix.com Tel +44 (0) 9323 54254 Fax +44 (0) 9323 52781 Disclaimer: Me, say that ? See their ad in PC Magazine. It is the original PS35, not the PS17, and comes with 1.5MB of memory. Delivery was promised as 5 - 7 days and it arrived via UPS yesterday, one week after I ordered it. My friend just picked it up today and is in the process of setting it up, so I can't report on that. The TI is obviously based on the Sharp JX-9500. They look virtually identical, except the TI does PS of course. I've owned the JX-9500 for about 5 months and been quite pleased with the print quality. Also our church has a TI microLaser connected to a Mac - it has been getting a LOT of use for over 6 months with not a single problem. So far, I'd give a hearty recommendation to either the TI or the Sharp. These printers are not based on the Canon engine, and do not use the single Canon-type replaceable unit. Instead, the toner and developer drum are replaced separately. This arrangement should prove slightly cheaper in the long run, I think. -- byronl@techbook.COM ...!{tektronix!nosun,uunet}techbook!byronl Public Access UNIX at (503) 644-8135 (1200/2400) Voice: +1 503 646-8257 Public Access User --- Not affiliated with TECHbooks
