I am looking for a 300dpi (or better) printer to typeset TeX documents. I don't want to spend more than $1000, and if I can get away with less, that would be great. I can get an HP LaserJet IIP for $1000 from basically any retail outlet, e.g., Computerland. I'm wondering if I can do better in either direction -- more printer for my grand, or the same printer for less money. I also heard a rumour that the engine on the IIP wears out after a couple of years, unlike the engine on the LaserJet III, which will go on indefinitely. If anyone has some facts on this, I'd appreciate hearing them. I don't care if the printer has PostScript add-ons, since I am sure I can make Ghostscript work with any reasonable printer. I am more interested in speed at downloading fonts (and/or memory to not have to download them). If anyone has any recommendations or unrecommendations, please send me mail. I will summarize if warranted. Thanks in advance. karl@cs.umb.edu karl@ai.mit.edu

I bought my IIP last fall when they first came out (not quite a year ago) and it is showing no signs of wear. The life of the printer cartidge seems at least comparable to the regular series II, although it is rated for less pages before the toner wears out. Chad Price. price@fergvax.unl.edu
