I've got a most baffling problem getting a laser printer to work with a Unix system. The laser printer is a Texas Instruments Omnilaser 2015 capable of four different printer emulations including an HP LaserJet+. The Unix host is a Sequent Balance which runs a variation of BSD 4.2. At present the laser printer does in fact work with the Sequent and can print, but only when using a TI 855DP emulation. When any of the other emulations are used--especially the HP LaserJet one--only mangled text or garbage appears. All print tests have been done with standard ASCII text files only. No special escape sequences or graphics are being passed to the printer. When the TI Omnilaser is attached to a DOS based PC all of the emulations work just fine and therefore it would appear there is nothing wrong with the hardware within the Omnilaser. Since the Omnilaser will print with only the single emulation it would seem that at least most of the settings being used in /etc/printcap on the Sequent are okay. The actual entry looks like so: laser|TI Laser Printer:\ :br#9600:\ :of=/usr/lib/lpf:\ :lp=/dev/ttyi6:\ :rs:\ :sh:\ :lf=/usr/adm/lpd-errs:\ :sd=/usr/spool/lpd:\ :pl#66:\ :pw#80: Also, just to see whether another laser printer would fare any better a true HP LaserJet IID was hooked up to the same tty port, using the same printcap entry and it also produced garbage when a text file was sent to it. It is also know to be good, and works perfectly when attached to a DOS based PC. Please send replies, comments and ideas only through mail as I only have limited access to a Usenet feed. Many thanks. --Michael Faurot (mfaurot@bogart.UUCP)
