I am looking for a postscript laser printer to use with my Sun-3/160 in my home office. It will be connected to a serial port at 9600 (or 19200 if it'll work) baud. My software applications will include BBN/Slate for general text/spreadsheet/ graphics, schematic printouts (typically 30-50KB files of vectors and characters), and moderate quantities of source-code printouts. Ideally it will also print faxes when I get a faxmodem - possibly in Laserjet mode for those printers that support this. I am seeking information on: performance compatibility reliability operating cost _cheap_ dealers (see best prices below) do you have one that you're willing to part with, or a _slightly_ used higher-end model? My main constraint is price: I want to stay under $2,000 (preferably, _well_ under $2,000). This has narrowed my options to the following: Apple LaserWriter NT (lowest price=$2279, maybe used?) Epson EPL-7500 ($1999) Fujitsu RX7100PS (list=$3190, haven't found retail but should be in range) NEC Silent Writer 90 ($1500! - a leading contender) Panasonic KX-P4455 ($1999) I have a "Buyer's guide to laser printers" which also lists the Dass MegaWriter PS and some models by Lasersmith. I am not familiar with these companies, have not found retail distribution (at least, not in Computer Shopper), and am somewhat skeptical of something only listed in a table. In particular, I called Dass in Aptos, CA, and got what sounded like an answering machine for a _very_ small company. Both companies appear to offer interesting products at a very attractive price. Please respond by email, and I will summarize if it is warranted, or call if you would like to discuss selling. Mark Papamarcos msp@ditka.chicago.com (San Jose, CA) (408)223-1308
