My company (Chelgraph) makes and sells Imagesetting equipment. We are developing an Ethernet interface to these products, and want to support the TCPIP protocols. Just saying "TCPIP" does not, however, completely define the interface: what higher level protocol should be used to talk to the printer (e.g. FTP) ? We do not want to re-invent the wheel. There must be standards already in existence for talking to printers (e.g. DEC, Linotype). Could any users of these printers provide advice or pointers to any reference information that would help me ? Thanks. The specifications for Digital's TCP/IP laser printer protocol are public documents. They are on file with Jon Postel, as the documentation associated with the use of TCP socket 170. You can also order a copy of these documents from my laboratory's librarian; send e-mail to wrl-techreports@decwrl.dec.com to talk to an ordering robot.

The protocol used to talk to the Unix lpd daemon is described in RFC 1179, "Line Printer Daemon Protocol", dated August 1990. Check the comp.protocols.tcp-ip newsgroup if you need more help. (I actually pruned this from a recent request in comp.protocols.tcp-ip.ibmpc.) Ken (shiva@well.sf.ca.us)
