[comp.binaries.amiga] Pak -- a file archiving program

ahh@s.cc.purdue.edu (Brent L. Woods) (11/12/87)

This is Pak, submitted by: John Mesiavech (jdm@pnet02.cts.com)

We've tested it and it works. We have assigned no archive volume
number to this posting as we don't have control of the archives yet.
When we get control, we will archive everything and then post a
directory of where everything was placed.

More details about the program below.

[ For al you doooo......This Line's for you!]

Following is a shar archive of Pak, a new archiver by the author of
nemesis, Mark Riley. This is version 1.0..a new version available soon. PAK
is unique in several areas:

o Files created with PAK unPAK themselves; just type the name of the
         PAK archive to unpack it.

o PAK files are in multiples of 128 bytes..so no chopping nessessary.
o PAK supports full AmigaDOS wildcards.

In the shar file is PAK.Doc, PAK.uue, and PAK.pak.uue, the original archive.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-> CUT HERE (as usual) <-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-0

# This is a shell archive.
# Remove everything above and including the cut line.
# Then run the rest of the file through sh.
#----cut here-----cut here-----cut here-----cut here----#
#!/bin/sh
# shar: Shell Archiver
# Run the following text with /bin/sh to create:
# pak.doc
# pak.uue
# This archive created: Wed Nov 4 00:12:25 1987

XX
XX*** Information ***
XX
XXPAK is a utility for combining and compressing several smaller files into
XXone large file. The PAKed file may then be uploaded to a BBS or another
XXcomputer. Transmission time is reduced because PAKed files are compressed.
XXAlso, the receiving party does *not* require any special program to unPAK
XXthe files - PAKed files unPAK themselves! Unlike other utilities of its
XXtype, PAK imposes no restrictions on filenames. PAK's small size (under
XX5K) makes it handier than those written in high-level languages (PAK is
XXwritten in 68000 Assembly Language.) PAK is simple to use, so have fun!
XX
XXThis program is ShareWare; it isn't free. If you like it (or use it) please
XXsend a $10 contribution to the following address:
XX
XXMark Riley - Pak
XXP.O. Box 234
XXSimi Valley, CA 93062
XX
XXThank you! This contribution will help me to provide further low cost
XXutilities for the Amiga (I've already got several queued up.)
XX
XXYou may freely redistribute PAK in its original unaltered state. If you
XXhave any questions or comments, I can be reached at the above address or
XXthe following services:

XX
XX*** PAKing Files ***
XX
XXPAK is simple to use. You may want to install it into your "c:" directory
XXbefore you use it though. This way it'll be there no matter which
XXdirectory you move to. BTW, PAK works from the CLI only.
XX
XXUsage: PAK master[.PAK] file [file...]
XX
XXThe first parameter is the pathname for the master file. This is
XXfollowed by one or more pathnames for the files you want to PAK together.
XXFiles are compressed and added to the master file in the order specified.
XXOnly the name of the files are stored in the master file (not the complete
XXpathname.) Also, the default extension ".pak" is added to the master
XXpathname if not already present. You may need to explicitly add ".pak"
XXto the master pathname if you have a file with the same name (minus the
XX".pak")
XX
XXOnce you've created a PAK file you may add more files to it by simply
XXusing it as the master name again. If you want to start from scratch,
XXdelete the master file first.
XX
XXPAK files are created in multiples of 1K. This facilitates their use
XXwith either XMODEM or YMODEM since no chopping is required.
XX
XXExample:
XX
XX1> dir
XX Display Picture
XX ReadMe
XX1> pak Test readme display picture
XXReadMe...PAKed
XXDisplay...PAKed
XXPicture...PAKed
XX1>
XX
XX*** Displaying PAKed Files ***
XX
XXUsage: PAK master[.PAK]
XX
XXIf the master pathname is specified alone, then PAK will display the files
XXin that master file, along with the original and compressed file sizes.
XX
XXExample:
XX
XX1> pak test
XXSIZE PAKed FILENAME
XX------ ------ --------
XX239 202 ReadMe
XX2456 1924 Display
XX33724 25776 Picture
XX1>
XX
XX*** UnPAKing Files ***
XX
XXThis is the easy part! You've already done it when you unPAKed this file.
XXAll you need to do is run the PAKed file. I suggest that you move it to
XXan empty directory, as it'll overwrite any files with similar names.
XX
XXWhen uploading PAKed files to a BBS, explain in the description that all
XXthe user has to do is type the filename from the CLI to unPAK it. Also,
XXmake sure that you use the ".pak" extension (this is the default) so that
XXthis becomes standard and explanations won't be necessary in the future.
XX
XXExample:
XX
XX1> dir
XX Test.pak
XX1> test.pak
XX1> dir
XX Test.pak ReadMe
XX Display Picture
XX1>
