[net.dcom] Ven-Tel vs Dataswitch

		Ven-Tel Model 212 Plus

I recently attempted to use the Ven-Tel 212 Plus "conversational"
modem on our Dataswitch running Version 2.3. My desire was to create
a single "directory" that would allow both dial "in" and "out" capa-
bility with the same set of data sets, namely the Ven-Tel's. My motives
were to eliminate the need for Develcon's ACU board( its current implemen-
tation is a poor compliance with the RS-366 interface, especially if you
like "shared" acu operation. Also, I wanted to get better utilization of
our prensent 16 line hunt group.
Unless I am missing the boat, the Ven-Tel will not allow for this
dual capability. Reasons:

The Ven-Tel raises "carrier detect" (CD) when it is powered up, and
not in response to actual carrier being sensed. If a user who has
connected to the Ven-Tel via the Dataswitch drops the connection,
the line will go into the "PU" state making it unusable by the next
user. Fortunately when DTR goes down, the Ven-Tel will hang up.

If one plays games with the Dataswitch/Ven-Tel interface by tying
DTR to CD at the Dataswitch then the above problem is "fixed" but
if someone dials in to the Dataswitch via the Ven-Tel then upon
disconnecting by just hanging up which is usually the case, the
Dataswitch will never see this and consequently that user would
never be logged off unless a ^d or internal computer timeout was
initiated. (We users are so lazy aren't we!!!!!!)

Does anyone know of any other "conversational" modems that might fit my
bill or am I doing it all wrong with the Ven-Tel????
