Since RS-232, and nearly all of current modem practices date back to the original Bell System methods, one can often find answers by reading the apropriate Bell System publications. There is a series called Bell System Technical References which has one volume for each Bell System modem (and on other topics, as well). The volume PUB 41202 Data Sets 202C and 202D Inter- face Specifications discusses the use of RTS/CTS for flow control in turning around half-duplex modems. (Note that in the 103, the grandaddy of 300 bps, that CTS just follows Carrier Detect.) --henry schaffer
