I have ordered a Racal-Vadic 3451P for my own use, but the distributor wants to substitute an Anderson Jacobson 1259 instead. He claims that it is a legitimate second source, and is identical to the 3451P. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows whether or not this is true. Thanks in advance, Jan Edler ..!cmcl2!edler

One difference between the AJ1259 and the RV 3451 is that the Vadic has three switches on the front panel - the extra one is labelled "DA/VO/MA". In the DA position, the modem is forced to connect to the line - apparently the AJ has a "CONN" position of its "FA" (force answer) switch which performs the identical function. "VO" selects auto-answer mode, which is the AJ modem's default anyway. However, the "MA" (manual) position prevents the modem from answering the phone at all, even if DTR is asserted - the AJ modem has no equivalent capability. Now, if you leave your terminal powered off, or have some way of forcing it to drop DTR when you aren't using it, the modem won't answer anway, so you have no problem. This IS a difference between the two, though. I'm in the process of buying an AJ 1259 myself, and the local distributor is apparently willing to modify them (for a small fee, of course) to add a switch which will provide the unconditional disconnect function.
