DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO SEMINAR ACTIVITIES SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATION SEMINAR - Thursday, November 12, 1987 Dr. A.R. Conn, of the Combinatorics and Optimization Department, will speak on ``A Class of Methods for Solving Minimization Problems With Simple Bounds on the Variables''. TIME: 4:00 PM ROOM: MC 5097 ABSTRACT This talk presents recent work carried out jointly with Ph. Toint and N.I.M. Gould. The intended general framework is that of solving large nonlinear programming problems. The approach is based upon a trust region method, adapted to handle upper and lower bounds. The extension to large problems depends upon the idea of partial seperability. Some preliminary numerical results will be included.
